Officer Mathew Hickey has retired after thirty years of service in Marietta, Ohio, and wants his K-9 partner Ajax to join him. Ajax is ‘part of the family now” after three years together fighting the bad guys, so Hickey offered to buy the dog for $3,500. But because Ajax still has five or six years left in his career and is city property, under an Ohio bylaw, he must be put up for auction, which means any current or former police officer or police dog trainer could buy his former partner.
Hickey is worried that at auction the price could be driven much too high for him to afford, so friends set up a GoFundMe page that has raised over $65,000 so far.
UPDATE: Marietta officials announced today that if Hickey remained as an auxiliary member of the police force, he would be allowed to remain as Ajax’s handler. No word yet on Hickey’s response.
