Celebrity photographer Kevin Abosch, who has photographed Yoko Ono, Malala Yousafzai, Johnny Depp and others, recently sold a picture of a potato, titled “Potato #345” for ONE MILLION EUROS (over $1.5 million Cdn). The unnamed European businessman saw the photo on the wall of Abosch’s home in Paris, and offered to buy it after four glasses of wine. Abosch says it’s the most he’s ever been paid for a non-commissioned piece of work.
Why did the potato sit for its portrait? Abosch told CNN “I see commonalities between humans and potatoes that speak to our relationship as individuals within a collective species. Generally, the life of a harvested potato is violent and taken for granted. I use the potato as a proxy for the ontological study of the human experience.”
