Actress Patty Duke has died at the age of 69. She made her Broadway debut at age 12 when she played Helen Keller, and won an Academy Award at age 16 when she reprised the role in “The Miracle Worker”. She went on to star in “The Patty Duke Show” in the 1960’s, became one of the industry’s most-respected actresses, won several Emmys, and served as president of the Screen Actors Guild from 1985-1988.
In her memoir “Call Me Anna”, Duke revealed that she was miserable behind the scenes. She claimed that her managers controlled almost every aspect of her life; she also accused them of sexual abuse and mishandling her finances. She began abusing alcohol and prescription drugs at a young age.
Duke was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 1982 and became a mental health advocate. Two of her three sons, MacKenzie and Sean (who played ‘Sam’ in the Lord of the Rings trilogy) followed in her acting footsteps.
Duke’s cause of death was reportedly sepsis from a ruptured intestine.
Duke appeared in the 4th season finale of Glee in 2013:
