It’s a complicated issue, but the bottom line is that Earls will no longer be serving Canadian beef its restaurants.
The chain wants to source beef from federally-inspected ‘Certified Humane’ Farms, which produce beef with no added hormones or antibiotics (unless the animal is ill and needs veterinary treatment). Such farms DO exist in Alberta, but are not able to meet Earls’ demand chain-wide; after using this locally-sourced beef in several locations including Edmonton and Calgary for several years, Earls will be using a Kansas supplier.
Experts say the addition of antibiotics to promote animal growth or feed efficiency, rather than treating disease only, contributes to ‘superbugs’ that resist all antibiotics used to treat humans, and that these steps are badly overdue.
