Premier Rachel Notley announced today that the phased re-entry of Fort McMurray residents will begin on Wednesday, June 1st. This timeline is dependent on serveral conditions being met: wildfire must no longer be an imminent threat (and air quality must be acceptable), critical infrastructure (electricity, water, gas, transportation, emergency services, access to food, etc) must be repaired to provide basic levels of service, hazardous areas must be secured, and that local government is re-established.
Government will be providing an online mapping application that residents can use to find out if their particular neighbourhood is safe, and the dates for return.
Tentative re-entry on a voluntary and phased basis schedule:
Wednesday June 1st: areas of Lower Townsite, Anzac and First Nations communities
June 2: North Fort McMurray including Timberlea and Thickwood
June 3: South Fort McMurray including Gregoire, Saline Creek
June 4: Abasand, Beacon Hill and Saprae Creek
Premier Notley outlined conditions that must be met for safety in the city, an update on financial assistance given to date, and more:
