I have seen a LOT of musicals in my day, and no other musical has been as shocking, offensive, and blasphemous as this one.
Before going to this show (Put on by Broadway across Canada at the Jubilee) you have to keep in mind that it is a religious satire. At least I had to remind myself numerous times.
Book Of Mormon follows the story of both ‘Elder Price’ and ‘Elder Cunningham’, two young 19 year old boys who were raised as Mormons and are about to embark on their first mission. Most kids get sent to Paris, or as Elder Price would hope, ‘Orlando’ but they get tasked with heading to ‘Uganda’ to spread the good word of the Book of Mormon.
After that, I can’t really say much other than they kept the audience at the Jubilee laughing constantly, with some of the most crude, and offensive language in a musical I have ever seen.
This should come to no surprise if you’ve seen the television show ‘South Park’ as it’s creators both Matt Stone and Trey Parker were the ones that wrote The Book Of Mormon along with Robert Lopez (Who had a hand in both Avenue Q and Frozen).
Overall? I can see why it had earned 9 Tony awards and critical praise. It’s end message (To me) was that organized religion can be a good thing, if your ultimate goal is to help people. Which is what both Elder Kevin and Elder Arnold do.
I give it 5 out of 5 stars for it’s flawless music/singing, and for it’s liberal use of coarse language while still managing to keep a massive crowd entertained.
PLEASE DON’T BRING THE KIDS.
