Yep, you read that right. Montreal has followed the entire province of Ontario’s lead and BANNED pitbulls.
This isn’t completely unheard of in Canada…there are quite a few places that you may not reside if you have a pitty in the family…click HERE for more details. Did you know there are pitbull restrictions right here in Alberta??
So let me catch you up on the events of the past few days.
Three months ago, a woman tragically lost her life following a vicious attack from a pitbull. This event is very sad, and I send my condolences to her family. I do feel the need to point out; however, that although pit bulls do sit at number one in breeds involved in fatal dog attacks (AND non fatal ones) in the US and Canada that rottweillers, huskies, german shepherds and bull mastiffs have racked up quite a few victims as well.
Then there is this meme going around which may give you some food for thought:
and this one:
Do they make a good point? You decide.
So anyway, back to my point: because of this fatal attack three months ago Montreal’s city council passed a vote yesterday in favour of changes to its animal control bylaw that include a ban on new ownership of pit bull and pit bull-type dogs. The final vote was 37-23 in favor of the ban.
What is going to happen to the pit bulls currently in Montreal? Their owners will have to muzzle their dog, keep them on a leash shorter than 4 ft long and obtain a special permit by Dec 31st, 2016 in order to keep their dog. This means if a police officer thinks your dog looks like a pitbull and asks for your permit and you do not have one, they can take your dog away. If you do not have your dog muzzled and on a short leash, they can take your dog away. If they take your dog away, they can euthanize him or her.
As for the dogs currently in shelters, they will be euthanized.
Montreal’s new bylaw defines pitbulls as
- Staffordshire bull terriers.
- American pit bull terriers.
- American Staffordshire terriers.
- Any mix with these breeds.
- Any dog that presents characteristics of one of those breeds.
The Montreal SPCA is planning to take this matter up with the superior court in Quebec. The action will be brought before a judge tomorrow who will hopefully declare the section targeting “pitbull type dogs” illegal. The SPCA states this bylaw is vague, discriminatory, and is unreasonable. More here.
Do you agree with this new ban, or disagree?
I leave you with this, a picture of Shogun. The sweetest, most loving, handsome pitbull I know!
