It was on this week way back in 1976 that the first teaser for the original Star Wars was released.
The film was due out at Christmas and 20th Century Fox had already sunk around $10 million into the movie, but execs had basically no idea what the film was about because George Lucas and his crew were extremely tight lipped about the project.
Lucas spent 3 weeks building the teaser to show nervous Fox execs who hated what they saw, and for good reason! The teaser was missing the familiar music and the effects aren’t finished. The lightsabers wielded by Darth Vader and Obi-Wan Kenobi are still plain white. And the tagline (“The story of a boy, a girl, and a universe!”) makes it sound like a cheesy romance novel.
