The Wood Buffalo Brewing Company in Fort McMurray had left a pallet of peated malt outside when the city of 88, 000 people were evacuated.
Union re-entry, head brewer Spike Baker was forced to dump fire tainted beer down the drain. While the staff of WBBC was cleaning up, they noticed the forgotten grain outside. Originally they feared it was unusable and had to be discarded. However; testing quickly revealed that it was safe for use.
The brewery is now preparing to use the double smoked barley to create a whisky, flavored by and named after “The Beast, which ripped through the city in May.
10 bottles of the Whisky will be auctioned off at the distilling party today, with much of the proceeds going to the Friends of Fort McMurray Firefighters Charities Fund. WBBC is also going to donate 10 bottles per year to various charities that support victims of the wildfire.
