Thirty years ago today, U2 performed on the rooftop of an L.A. liquor store, clearly a nod to the Beatles’ final public performance in 1969. Unlike the Fab Four’s publicity stunt, the U2 concert was publicized, but only 1,000 of the expected 35,000 fans showed up. As expected, police arrived to shut things down, but only after the band was able to get in eight songs for the delighted fans below.
Watch for the police cutting off power at the 2:50 mark of the song (hello, backup generators!)
This year U2 is on the ‘Joshua Tree 30th Anniversary Tour’ and will play the album in full at each show.
