UPDATE: This is getting more controversial as the movie’s opening approaches – here’s how Austin’s mayor responded to a letter he received about the planned women-only screening;

The ‘Alamo Drafthouse’ in Austin, Texas is not your usual corporate, cookie-cutter chain theatre;
Saturday night, they showed ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ on a boat.
Last week, theatre-goers were given gas masks, survival gear, and taken on a bus to an undisclosed location in the woods to watch Stephen King’s ‘It’. You get the idea.
So when the Drafthouse announced a ‘ladies only’ screening of Wonder Woman (and ‘no guys allowed’ applied to their staff, too), they expected mixed reaction:
They got that mixed reaction, with comments on Twitter, and the theatre’s Facebook post;
“Could you imagine the anger and outrage from the liberal staff of Alamo if Trump held an all-male screening at the White House or even if another theatre did an all-male screening?!” said one commenter. “It’s okay Alamo Drafthouse I guess since it’s Memorial Day us men will continue to do what we’ve done and die so you can have your little showing of Wonder Woman. Because nothing says equality like men dying and women watching a movie,” said another.
I'm going to identify as a woman, and if you deny me entry, I'm going to sue you for discrimination and mis-gendering me.

it's fun to exclude people. Makes you feel very powerful.

Already looking into the legalities of this,. Refusing to employ or do business with someone based on sex…see you in court.

Posts and replies defending the screening were quick, and witty:
It is SO UNFAIR of the Alamo Drafthouse to exclude men from the Wonder Woman screening. pic.twitter.com/nvi2sk6bjc

Men complaining about the all woman screening of Wonder Woman can go to Saudi Arabia and see Toby Keith perform.

Drafthouse should counter the Wonder Woman complaints with a men-only screening of The Boss Baby.

With proceeds from the screening to Planned Parenthood, the Drafthouse quickly added a second women-only screening in New York after the Austin event sold out in record time;

Even more screenings have been added, and those too, have sold out!
