Playing until this Sunday is Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “Sound Of Music”, and for myself, it did not disappoint. Set with a beautiful backdrop of Austria this musical takes you on a journey through the the late 1930’s with the Von Trapp family. (BUY TICKETS HERE) – It’s also playing in Calgary next week!!
Now we all know the story. It follows Maria as the new Governess of the 7 Von Trapp children, while she decides whether to become a Nun or not. She falls in love with the children, and then falls deeply in love with the widowed Captain Von Trapp, yada yada.. If I tell you any more, I’ll just spoil it!
What caught my eye at the very beginning was the amount of changes they had made that were very subtle. They added a few songs, and even changed around the verses to others, which seemed like no big deal to myself at all, but for the die hard Sound Of Music fan, it could be a difficult pill to swallow. The biggest change I saw was adding “My favourite things” that Maria sings near the beginning of the show with Mother Abbess (Who will BLOW you away with her rendition of, “Climb Ev’ry Mountain”). In the film this is not the case, however in the live theatrical production, this is how it should go as the song is reprised nearly 3 times (Sung beautifully might I add).
There may have been changes, but the overall audience opinion was high (it got a standing ovation..)

“Sixteen going on Seventeen” was absolutely adorable, sung by Liesl and Rolf. Another thing I found different, was how Rolf was portrayed by Chad P. Campbell.
Overall, I thought this was masterfully done. Maria is a very VERY difficult character to both sing and portray. As my wife said, “She’s no Julie Andrews” but I thought Jillian Christine-Wiley was OUTSTANDING. The 7 Von Trapp children were perfectly casted and will MELT your heart ESPECIALLY when they sing, “So long farewell”, and Captain Von Trapp, while a little young, suited the part wonderfully.
I give this 4.5 out of 5 and is a MUST see this weekend. (Especially if you’ve never seen it).
See Jillian portray just a snippet of Maria below.
